65. Little Deaths/Delights
Share
Hello hello hello hello
After exactly one month of de-activating my Instagram account on my 25th birthday, I have re-activated it.
I had had the account since I was twelve years old and wanted to understand what it would feel like to not have one, the same way I gave up alcohol for six months a couple of years ago just to prove to myself that I could.
I learned a lot and found myself with more mental clarity and space to read, connect with my friends in person more, to talk to my family more often to to learn more about business, economics, and other more left brain things that I’ve put off in the past. I also worked on my relationship with God, because even Christian Instagram can feel highly politicized and like choking on your faith. Devotional living to me is much quieter, volunteering, listening to people, reading scripture, and wrestling with your own feelings in prayer.
I also finally read Anna Karenina.
But I found myself feeling fomo in these interesting moments of connections with strangers. Like wanted to tell the French writer from my flight that I did read On the Road on a recommendation from him, or at the open mic I was at in the East Village last night, having to tell the other performers that I didn’t have Instagram when they wanted to connect.
Overall, my hiatus was really rewarding and I think it will fundamentally change the way I use social media moving forward. At the top of the year, when I was in a bad spot, the only thing I wanted to do was karaoke. I’ve done karaoke two to three times a week for somewhere around six months now, and one day my mother said to me, “karaoke is not music.” And she was right.
I have also been on the open mic scene for some months now, and will be using my personal instagram and my personal newsletter to promote places where I’ll be performing.
Now onto my little deaths and delights
please share yours in the comments, thank u and goodnight xx
