Three ways makers get paid

Almost every creative income is one of three things. Knowing which you’re doing makes every decision easier.

1. 1Products: things people buy, like books, prints, records, clothes.
2. 2Services: your time, like workshops, coaching, commissions, performing.
3. 3Attention: an audience that brands or platforms pay to reach, through sponsorships, ads, or royalties.
4. 4Products scale without you. Services pay more per hour but need you there. Attention takes longest to build.
