Wholesale and consignment
The two ways shops carry your work, and the numbers behind them.
- 1Wholesale: the shop buys it from you up front. The usual wholesale price is about half of retail (shops call doubling it “keystone”).
- 2Consignment: the shop pays you only when it sells. Splits are often 60/40 or 50/50, with you taking the bigger share.
- 3Wholesale is less money per item but certain. Consignment is more per item but you carry the risk.
- 4Your retail price has to leave room for wholesale, or you’ll lose money in shops.

Check your price: if you sold it wholesale at half, would you still have a margin?
