44 Union Square
The story
This neo-Georgian building was erected at the height of Tammany Hall's power, when the political machine counted a U.S. senator, a governor, and a mayor among its members. Built in 1928–1929 and designed by Thompson, Holmes & Converse and Charles B. Meyers, it stands as Tammany's oldest surviving headquarters. The organization lost its grip within a decade of moving in, and by 1943 the building passed to a garment workers' union. It later housed a theater, then a film academy. The city made it a landmark in 2013.
