ABC No Rio
The story
ABC No Rio was born from an eviction. After the 1979–80 Real Estate Show was shut down, artists squatted 156 Rivington Street and opened a collectively-run space that housed a zine library, darkroom, silkscreening studio, public computer lab, and weekly hardcore punk matinees alongside the city's Food Not Bombs collective. Steven Englander directed it from 1998 until his death in 2024. The original building came down in 2016, but on July 16, 2024, the collective broke ground on a new four-story art center at the same Rivington Street address.
