Algus Greenspon Gallery
The story
The gallery that closed over a Neo-Nazi controversy opened with a song. Mitchell Algus and Amy Greenspon launched their West Village space in fall 2010 with Gene Beery's paintings and a live musical performance by Emily Sundblad and Pete Drungle — an unusual double debut that signaled the multidisciplinary ambition to come. For years Greenspon presented emerging and mid-career artists alongside museum-quality exhibitions. Then in 2018, the cancellation of a show by alleged Neo-Nazi Boyd Rice sparked controversy, and the gallery closed soon after.
