Alice Tully Hall

The story

Alice Tully, a New York performer turned philanthropist, essentially built this hall with her own donations — and then had her name put on it. Pietro Belluschi's Brutalist structure opened in 1969 on the Upper West Side, seating 1,086 inside a building that once turned its back on Broadway. Forty years later, Diller Scofidio + Renfro cracked it open: a three-story all-glass lobby and cantilevered extension announced the hall to the street for the first time. Home to the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, it also hosts the New York Film Festival.
