Atlantic Garden
The story
The Atlantic Garden was built on the bones of New York's old cattle market, where the Bull's Head Tavern once served as headquarters for the city's livestock trade. William Kramer opened his beer garden and music hall there in 1858, tucking a theater behind the beer hall where variety acts and popular music drew German immigrants away from the rougher Bowery. By 1910, as the neighborhood shifted again, the hall pivoted to Yiddish theatre. In 2013 it was razed for a high-rise hotel, and archaeologists found nothing of the tavern beneath.
