Belasco Theatre

The story

David Belasco built himself a ten-room duplex penthouse above his own theater, filling it with memorabilia while running his empire from the western wing below. Opened in 1907 as the Stuyvesant Theatre and designed by George Keister, the house announced itself with Tiffany lighting, ceiling panels, rich woodwork, and expansive murals by Everett Shinn. Its red brick Flemish-bond facade remains a landmark, as does the interior. The Shubert Organization has operated the 1,016-seat theater since 1948, keeping one of Broadway's most personal buildings very much in use.
