Bernard B. Jacobs Theatre
The story
A Broadway house dressed like a Spanish palace, the Jacobs Theatre opened in 1927 with golden brick, terracotta, and a vaulted ceiling painted with murals by Willy Pogany. Herbert J. Krapp designed it for developer Irwin S. Chanin as part of a coordinated theater-and-hotel block, one of several West 45th Street houses the Chanin brothers built at once. The 1,100-seat auditorium and its facade are both New York City landmarks, meaning the Spanish arched windows and Pogany's murals are protected — the room you sit in tonight is the room that has always been there.
