Booth Theatre
The story
The Booth shares its stage house with the Shubert Theatre next door — an unusual architectural intimacy hiding behind one of Broadway's most elegant facades. Henry Beaumont Herts designed the Italian Renaissance building in 1913 for the Shubert brothers, finishing the brick and terracotta exterior with sgraffito stucco decorations and three arches facing 45th Street. Original operator Winthrop Ames named it for 19th-century actor Edwin Booth. Inside, wooden-paneled walls with windows above them remain a rare sight on Broadway. The facade and parts of the interior are now New York City landmarks.
