Broadway Theatre
The story
One of the very few Broadway theaters actually sitting on Broadway, this 1,763-seat house opened on Christmas Day 1924, designed by Eugene De Rosa for Benjamin S. Moss as a movie theater. It has worn several names since — Colony, Earl Carroll's, Ciné Roma — before becoming what it is today under the Shubert Organization. A 1986 renovation by Oliver Smith gave the auditorium its warm reddish palette. An office tower, completed in 1990, now cantilevers directly above the room where audiences still sit.
