Caffe Reggio
119 MacDougal Street
The espresso machine here predates most of us by a century, and so does the Village's habit of arguing about poetry over cappuccino in this very room.
The story
Caffe Reggio owns a bench from a Medici palazzo, which sets the tone for everything else here. When Domenico Parisi opened the coffeehouse on Macdougal Street in 1927, he brought with him a 1902 espresso machine that still stands against the back wall — and, by most accounts, introduced cappuccino to America in the process. John F. Kennedy spoke outside in 1959. The Godfather Part II, Serpico, and Inside Llewyn Davis were all filmed here. In 2010, the Greenwich Village Society for Historic Preservation gave it a Village Award, recognizing what the neighborhood already knew.
