Center for Brooklyn History
The story
The building that houses Brooklyn's memory was constructed by the same man who built Madison Square Garden. David H. King Jr. raised this Romanesque Revival landmark at Pierrepont and Clinton Streets between 1878 and 1881, from a design by George B. Post. The institution itself is older — founded in 1863 by Henry Pierrepont as the Long Island Historical Society. It became the Brooklyn Historical Society in 1985, then the Center for Brooklyn History. Today it reaches more than 70,000 public school students a year, keeping four centuries of Brooklyn alive in classrooms across the borough.
