Daryl Roth Theatre

The story

A savings bank built to outlast its money now holds stories instead. The Union Square Savings Bank building, designed by Henry Bacon and completed between 1905 and 1907, began its life far more humbly — the institution was founded in 1848 as the Institution for the Savings of Merchants' Clerks. When Daryl Roth Theatre opened here in 1998, the landmarked four-story structure became an off-Broadway space seating 300 or holding 499 standing. A smaller annex next door, DR2, seats 99. The building has always been about accumulation — first money, now meaning.
