Embassy Theatre

The story

Murals by Arthur Crisp still line the walls of a space that once held 598 seats facing a movie screen. Thomas W. Lamb designed the Embassy Theatre, which opened in 1925 on the ground floor of a building that served as headquarters for the Actors' Equity Association — an unlikely pairing of Hollywood glamour and labor organizing. The Rambusch Decorating Company gave the ceiling its plasterwork and a central recessed dome. The seats are gone now, replaced by retail, but the marble, mirrors, and murals remain intact under landmark protection on Broadway.
