Ethel Barrymore Theatre
The story
A theater named after a living actress is unusual enough, but the Ethel Barrymore came with a deal attached: the Shubert brothers built it after Barrymore agreed to let them manage her career. Herbert J. Krapp designed the 1928 house in a blend of Elizabethan, Mediterranean, and Adam styles, with a terracotta arcade inspired by Roman baths and a 36-foot dome overhead. The Shubert Organization still runs it today, and both the facade and the auditorium interior are official New York City landmarks.
