Eugene O'Neill Theatre
The story
The Eugene O'Neill Theatre opened in 1925 not as a standalone house but as part of a hotel and theater complex named after 19th-century tragedian Edwin Forrest. Herbert J. Krapp designed it for the Shubert brothers, and its original brick-and-terracotta facade was stripped away in a 1940s renovation, replaced first with stucco and eventually painted limestone. Inside, Adam-style detailing, box seats within decorative arches, and a coved ceiling with medallions survived the changes. That auditorium interior is now a New York City designated landmark, holding 1,108 seats.
