Forbes Galleries

The story

The Forbes Galleries were more popular with visitors than with New Yorkers — a quiet, telling fact about a place that held 12,000 toy soldiers, 500 ships, and one of the original Monopoly boards under one Fifth Avenue roof. Malcolm Forbes spent a lifetime collecting toys, and after his death the family kept the galleries open, adding Olympic medals and Fabergé eggs to the sprawl. In 2004, nine Fabergé eggs and 180 related pieces sold to Viktor Vekselberg for nearly $100 million. The galleries closed in November 2014, and the toys were auctioned off.
