Gerald Schoenfeld Theatre
The story
The Plymouth Theatre opened in 1917 under a name it kept for 87 years, until the Shubert Organization renamed it for Gerald Schoenfeld, the organization's longtime president. Herbert J. Krapp designed it for the Shubert brothers alongside the Broadhurst Theatre next door, giving both nearly identical neoclassical facades of buff-colored brick and terracotta. Inside, Adam-style plasterwork decorates an auditorium that seats 1,079 across two levels. Both the facade and the interior are now New York City landmarks — a rare double designation that quietly insists this particular room is worth protecting.
