Gershwin Theatre
The story
Broadway's largest theater lives on the second floor of an office building, reached by escalator. Opened in 1972 as the Uris Theatre, it was among the first venues built under the Special Theater District amendment of 1967, which encouraged developers to include theaters in commercial projects. Designer Ralph Alswang fit roughly 1,933 seats across two levels, with an orchestra section more than double the mezzanine above it. In the lobby rotundas, the American Theater Hall of Fame inscribes over 500 names — a quiet archive wrapped around the entrance to the biggest house on Broadway.
