Hostos Center for the Arts & Culture
The story
The New York Times called it 'the powerful locus for Latino art' in the Bronx, which is a heavy designation for a venue tucked inside a community college. Gwathmey Siegel & Associates designed the building, earning the 1988 Excellence in Design Award from the Art Commission of the City of New York. Inside: a museum-grade gallery, a 367-seat repertory theater, and an 884-seat main house. Over 33 years it has presented Rubén Blades and Dizzy Gillespie, hosted the acclaimed BomPlenazo festival, and commissioned individual artists. Its mission — to be a cultural force across the entire New York metropolitan area — has never softened.
