James Earl Jones Theatre

The story

The proscenium arch here is fitted with art glass that can illuminate during performances — a quietly theatrical touch embedded in a house built in 1912. Architect Thomas W. Lamb designed it for impresario John Cort, giving the 48th Street facade a colonnade and the lobby marble paneling and a coved ceiling. The Shubert Organization operates it now, and a western annex completed in 2022 added lounges and backstage space. Renamed for James Earl Jones, the theater holds 1,092 seats and carries landmark status for both its facade and interior.
