Joe's Pub

The story

Amy Winehouse and Adele both made their U.S. headlining debuts on this stage. Joe's Pub opened October 16, 1998, with an inaugural concert by Carl Hancock Rux, tucked into the side door of the Astor Library Building on Lafayette Street — an iron-fenced portal apart from the Public Theater's grander revolving entrance. Named for Joseph Papp, who gave New York free Shakespeare in the Park, the room carries his democratic spirit. By its 15th anniversary, Rolling Stone named it one of America's ten best clubs.
