Julius
The story
The management of Julius actively harassed gay customers until 1966, which makes its reputation as New York's oldest continuously operating gay bar a complicated inheritance. In April of that year, activists staged a "Sip-In" here, establishing the legal right of gay people to be served in licensed premises across the city — a block northeast of the Stonewall Inn, and three years before it. The bar opened sometime in the 1860s, and Tennessee Williams, Truman Capote and Rudolf Nureyev all drank here. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2016.
