Katz's Delicatessen
The story
Katz's Delicatessen is not kosher — a quietly radical fact for a place that has anchored Jewish Lower East Side life since 1888. Two brothers named Iceland founded it on Ludlow Street, but the name only became Katz's after Willy and his cousin Benny bought out the Icelands in 1910. Each week the kitchen moves 15,000 pounds of pastrami alone. Zagat ranked it New York's top deli in 2016. More than a century in, the pastrami on rye remains the argument that keeps people coming back.
