Kiev Restaurant
The story
The corner where Kiev Restaurant stood was once home to the candy shop that helped invent the egg cream. A Soviet emigrant named Michael Hrynenko opened Kiev there in 1978, and for most of its life the place never closed — 24 hours a day, seven days a week, serving pierogi, blintzes, kasha varnishkis, and matzah brei in the neighborhood once dense enough with Ukrainian restaurants to be called the Pierogi Belt. Parishioners from St. George's Church came for brunch after Sunday service. Kiev closed in 2000, flickered through failed reopenings, and went dark for good in 2006.
