Lena Horne Theatre
The story
The theater at 256 West 47th Street has worn three names, but its Spanish Revival bones — buff brick, terracotta, Palladian windows, murals above the box seats — have never changed. Herbert J. Krapp designed it for Irwin Chanin, and it opened as the Mansfield on February 15, 1926. It later became the Brooks Atkinson before being renamed the Lena Horne Theatre. Both the facade and the auditorium interior are New York City landmarks, meaning those 1,069 seats sit inside a space the city has promised to protect.
