Luhring Augustine Gallery

The story

For three years in the early 1990s, this gallery ran a Los Angeles outpost in partnership with Galerie Max Hetzler — 4,500 square feet in a refurbished Santa Monica building on 4th Street, an ambitious transatlantic experiment that didn't last but signaled what the gallery would become. Lawrence Luhring and Roland Augustine founded it in 1985, building a roster of international contemporary artists working across painting, sculpture, video and photography. Augustine later served as president of the Art Dealers Association of America. Today the gallery spans Chelsea and Tribeca.
