Matthew Marks Gallery
The story
The gallery's first Chelsea space was a converted single-story garage with skylights, opened in 1994 with a show of Ellsworth Kelly. Before that, Matthew Marks had worked at Pace Gallery in New York and Anthony d'Offay in London, then returned to open a 1,000-square-foot Madison Avenue space in 1991, debuting with an Artists' Sketchbooks show that included Louise Bourgeois, Jackson Pollock, and Cy Twombly. In 1996, the gallery joined Gladstone and Metro Pictures to carve up a 29,000-square-foot warehouse on West 24th Street — a move that helped define Chelsea as the center of the New York art world.
