Mercury Lounge

The story

A room that holds only 250 people has made Billboard Magazine's top-ten venue lists — and somehow that smallness is the whole point. The Mercury Lounge opened on the Lower East Side in 1993, founded by Michael Swier, Michael Winsch, and Brian Swier, who built it on acoustics and no-frills rock-and-roll conviction. Sister to the Bowery Ballroom, it became the kind of room where careers began rather than arrived. It has stayed independent, and in 2020 a scholarly account placed it squarely inside the longer story of Lower Manhattan's rock history.
