The story

In 2026, the Neue Galerie announced it would merge with the Metropolitan Museum of Art by 2028 — a striking fate for a museum that opened only in 2001. It began as a dream shared by two friends: art dealer Serge Sabarsky and collector Ronald S. Lauder, who met in 1967 and spent decades talking about building a home for early twentieth-century German and Austrian art. When Sabarsky died in 1996, Lauder carried the idea forward alone. The result was one of Museum Mile's most recent additions, housed in the William Starr Miller House at 86th and Fifth.
