New Amsterdam Theatre
The story
The New Amsterdam Theatre has two faces: a Beaux-Arts limestone front on 42nd Street and an Art Nouveau interior that the city has declared a landmark in its own right. Built between 1902 and 1903 by architects Herts & Tallant, it was among the first Broadway venues to open in Times Square. Its elliptical auditorium floats two cantilevered balconies above the orchestra, and somewhere above all of that sits a roof theater, opened in 1904 and now disused. Disney Theatrical Productions operates the 1,702-seat house today.
