New Museum
The story
Marcia Tucker founded the New Museum in 1977 inside a Graduate Center space at the New School for Social Research on Fifth Avenue — a borrowed room, not a building of its own. It moved to SoHo in 1983, then briefly to Chelsea, before settling at 235 Bowery on the Lower East Side. Along the way it built a program reaching artists from Argentina to Turkey to South Africa. Its 2003 affiliation with Rhizome anchored it to new media art globally, making it a rare institution where the internet itself counts as a serious artistic territory.
