The story
A movie palace designed by Thomas W. Lamb in 1927 became, across seven decades, almost every kind of place New York nightlife ever needed. William Fox opened it as a deluxe cinema; rock crowds filled it after the Fillmore East closed in 1971. Steve Rubell and Ian Schrager, fresh from Studio 54, converted it into a nightclub in 1985, hiring Arata Isozaki to redesign the interior. It closed in August 1997 when New York University bought it, and the building was demolished the following year — one address, endlessly reinvented.
