Paradise Theater
The story
A mechanical Seth Thomas clock and a sculpture of Saint George fighting a fire-breathing dragon once greeted anyone walking up the Grand Concourse. John Eberson designed the Paradise as a movie palace, and it opened on September 7, 1929, as one of five Loew's Wonder Theatres in the New York City area. Inside, 3,855 seats filled two levels beneath an elaborately decorated proscenium arch, with murals and sculptures lining the lobbies. No longer a working theater, its facade and interior survive as New York City designated landmarks.
