Queens Theatre
The story
Andy Warhol and Robert Indiana once decorated the walls of this theater, which began life as the Theaterama at the 1964 New York World's Fair. Audiences stood — no seats — watching a travelog of New York State projected across screens lining the interior. Philip Johnson and Richard Foster designed it as part of a $6 million project that also produced the Tent of Tomorrow pavilion. Now called Queens Theatre, it sits beside the Unisphere, a professional stage still drawing Queens audiences to a building that started as a fairground curiosity.
