Rainbow Room
The story
When 30 Rockefeller Plaza opened in 1933, the space above the 64th floor was meant to be a public amusement center. What it became was something stranger and more lasting. Wallace K. Harrison and interior designer Elena Bachman Schmidt shaped it into the Rainbow Room, which opened in 1934 on the 65th floor as one of the highest restaurants in the United States. It closed for World War II, survived the 2008 financial crisis's aftermath by closing again in 2009, and returned in 2014. Its interior is now a New York City landmark.
