Sam H. Harris Theatre
The story
The auditorium is gone, but the facade remains — now the face of Madame Tussauds. Built in 1914 inside the Candler Building, this 1,200-seat Thomas W. Lamb design was commissioned by Coca-Cola's Asa Griggs Candler and leased to George M. Cohan and Sam H. Harris. The ceiling held an elaborate saucer dome; Albert Herter painted six lobby murals. Though designed for both films and live Broadway, it went movies-only after 1933. By 1998 the auditorium was demolished. What survives on 42nd Street is the skin of something grander.
