Shubert Theatre
The story
The Shubert Theatre was built as a memorial — Lee and J. J. Shubert named it for their brother Sam, who died in an accident before it opened. Henry Beaumont Herts designed it in the Italian Renaissance style, and it debuted in 1913 with a brick-and-terracotta facade, sgraffito stucco decorations, and mythological murals covering the auditorium walls. The upper levels once held the brothers' own offices. Now a New York City landmark inside and out, it seats 1,502 across three levels and remains one of Broadway's essential stages.
