Stephen Sondheim Theatre
The story
Most Broadway theaters sit above ground — this one burrows beneath a skyscraper. The Stephen Sondheim Theatre, at 124 West 43rd Street, is mostly underground, tucked below the Bank of America Tower and holding 1,055 seats. Its neoclassical facade, designed by Harry Creighton Ingalls and built in 1918 by actor and producer Henry Miller, is a city landmark preserved inside the new structure designed by COOKFOX. After Miller died in 1926, his son Gilbert carried on. The Durst Organization now owns it; the Roundabout Theatre Company runs it.
