Storefront for Art and Architecture
The story
Storefront for Art and Architecture opened in a tiny SoHo storefront in 1982 with an explicit conviction: art and design carry a responsibility to shape public policy and the future of cities. Kyong Park founded it with R.L. Seltman and Arleen Schloss at 51 Prince Street. Within a year, the program was already taking on the polluted Gowanus Canal. By 1985 it turned to homeless shelters. Shirin Neshat later co-directed alongside Park, who led the organization from its founding until 1998. The civic, activist project format it established early on has defined its work ever since.
