Tavern on the Green
The story
The building that hosts one of Manhattan's most famous restaurants was originally a sheepfold, built in 1870 to house the animals that grazed Sheep Meadow. Calvert Vaux and Jacob Wrey Mould designed it. In 1934, parks commissioner Robert Moses evicted the sheep and opened Tavern on the Green in their place. The restaurant changed hands several times before closing in 2009, briefly becoming a visitor center before a multimillion-dollar renovation brought it back in 2014. Actors, musicians, politicians, and writers have all passed through. It still stands at the edge of Central Park, frequented and awarded.
