The Stone
The story
The only sign was the words 'The Stone' in small gold lettering on a door, visible only after a metal security gate rolled up a few hours before each show. John Zorn founded the not-for-profit experimental music space in April 2005, naming it for Irving Stone, an inveterate concertgoer in the New York City music community. No food, no drinks, no dancing — and every dollar from the door goes directly to the performers. That last part is the point.
