The Tin Palace
The story
An architect founded a jazz club. Misha Saradoff, who had tended bar at an off-Broadway theater watering hole called Phebe's, opened The Tin Palace on the Bowery at Second Street in the fall of 1973. He hired Paul Pines to manage it, and Pines had a clear vision: a jazz room with the energy of Sluggs' but without what he called its doomed gestalt of hard drugs and raw emotion. The early crowd included loft painters like Mike Goldberg and Robert Indiana. The club ran until 1979, presenting everything from standards to avant-garde and Afro-Brazilian artists.
