Todd Haimes Theatre

The story

The six-story Selwyn Building, which once served as the entrance to this theater, collapsed at the end of 1997. Brothers Edgar and Archibald Selwyn developed the house in 1918, naming it after themselves; George Keister designed it in Italian Renaissance style with a brick-and-terracotta facade. Roundabout Theatre Company eventually took it over, restoring the fan-shaped auditorium in blue and gold, with murals and box seats intact. Owned by New York City and state, leased to New 42nd Street, it now seats 740 across two levels — a survivor on a street that has swallowed so many others.
