Umberto's Clam House
The story
Umberto's Clam House had been open just two months when a rival gangster spotted Joe Gallo inside and sent in hitmen. It was April 7, 1972, early morning, and Gallo had stopped in with his wife, daughter, and bodyguard after celebrating his 43rd birthday at the Copacabana. The New York Times called his killing one of the more sensational Mafia murders in the city's recent history. The restaurant, founded by Umberto Ianniello on Mulberry Street in Little Italy, has since become known for its calamari, scungilli, and mussels — though the story that made it famous arrived before the menu could.
