Vineyard Theatre

The story

A Pulitzer Prize winner, a Tony-winning musical, and an Obie-winning show all began in a space that started as a 1,700-square-foot former storeroom. Barbara Zinn Krieger founded the Vineyard Theatre in 1981 inside the Phipps Plaza West apartment complex, with the explicit goal of giving daring artists a safe space to create original work. By 1989 the company had moved to Zeckendorf Towers near Union Square, where its 120 seats continue to incubate work that keeps finding its way to the center of American theatre.
