Walter Kerr Theatre
The story
Before it was a Broadway house, the Walter Kerr spent decades as a radio and television studio — CBS, NBC, then ABC cycled through it until 1965, leaving it abandoned for years. Herbert J. Krapp designed it for the Shubert brothers in 1921, and it opened as the Ritz Theatre with Mary Stuart. The Works Progress Administration ran it as a Federal Theatre Project space through the Depression. Inside, Adam-style detailing and murals survive beneath two balconies. Renamed in 1990 for critic Walter Kerr, it now seats 975 and is operated by ATG Entertainment.
