White Columns
The story
New York City's oldest alternative non-profit art space began in 1970 as 112 Workshop/112 Greene Street, founded in SoHo by artists Jeffrey Lew and Gordon Matta-Clark. It has moved four times since, shedding its original name for White Columns when it relocated to Spring Street in 1979. What has stayed constant is the promise: every submission gets looked at by the director. Some artists receive studio visits. A few get shown. That unusually direct attention to unaffiliated emerging artists is the whole point, and still is.
